Ghana Social & Economic Development
Ghana Social and Economic Posture
Ghana West-Africa is well endowed with natural resources
and has twice the per capita of poorer countries in West Africa.
However Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial
and technical assistance.
Ghana has a population of 22 million. Of that population over 20%
are unemployed (4,400,000). It is estimated that over 60% of the
labor force in the age group 15-35 are either out of job or are
under-employed. Of those that are unemployed, about 80% are relatively
ill-equipped through inadequate education and training.
Ghana has ten regions. Four of which Global Civic Preservation has
a presence (Greater Accra, Volta Region, Western Region and Ashanti
Region). Accra is the capital of Ghana, People living in the catchments
are living in deplorable conditions. The sanitation conditions are
very poor especially in Chokor. Apart from the sanitation issue,
poverty and employable skills are of great concern.
The Western Region consists of mainly farming and gold mining areas.
The problems in the most comities are poor water and sanitation,
poverty, and employable skills.
The Volta Region is mainly a fishing community. Although this community
doesn’t have a water issue, many children are sent to work
and fish for food and to try to provide a means of income, therefore
the truancy rate is very high for school age children.
The Ashanti Region is a little more industrious than that of the
others. However, many residents of the Ashanti Region still lack
education and skill training.
In addition to the unemployment rate, the country suffers greatly
from the lack of safe drinking and bathing water. Many residents
have no access to fresh water and therefore drink and bathe in contaminated
water. The sources of water in which the natives result to drinking
and bathing are stagnant dirty streams and rivers filled with water
borne disease. Some of the diseases and effects are bilhazzare,
skin rashes, diarrhea, guinea worms, schistosomes, cholera and e-coli
bacteria. Most of which are painful and deadly.
Our organization is currently working with communities in the Western
Region of Ghana to facilitate safe drinking and bathing water. For
safe, bacteria and disease-free water bore holes and wells have
to be constructed.
In addition, we are currently developing
school facilities and a recreational center for the Wassa Dunkwa
community and need your help. The current school structure is not
safe and is unfit to teach students. As you can see the current
school has nothing but a chalk board that isn’t suitable for
writing. Help us as we endeavor to make a positive difference for
the Wassa Dunkwa community.
